University Advisor

Job Description

The job holder will provide advice and guidance to college-bound students concerning their academic plans and progress, choice of university and major, career goals, and assist students in making life decisions to pursue higher education around the world.

Key Responsibilities

1.    Advisory


  • Provide full support and counsel to graduating students with their applications to both local and overseas universities.  Maintain a comprehensive set of resources in order to provide all the necessary information (including scholarship) for students to make intelligent choices about universities and meet deadlines.
  • Conduct individual face-to-face interview(s) with each Grade 11-12 students (and, where appropriate, their parents) at least once per school year, providing guidance on higher education plans, possible and realistic options and application process.  Provide mock interview as requested.
  • Provide assistance for at-risk students who do not meet university entry requirement.
  • Work with Grade 8-12 students to prepare them for university planning and use of BridgeU.


2.    Promotion


  • Promote ICS at university fairs and special functions, and invite them to visit ICS campus and set up information booths and present information on pertinent topics.  Establish personal networks with selected admissions officers at local and overseas universities.
  • Advertise university fairs, receptions and other university events by providing university materials and related handbooks at the University Corner and school library, updating university bulletin board, conducting university-related seminars and organizing events such as College Night, Junior Night, Career Day, etc.
  • Promote and oversee the use of BridgeU.


3.    Parent communication


  • Ongoing communication with parents through school events, and be available for appointments during Parent-Teacher Conferences or as and when required.
  • Provide information and feedback to parents about the university application process and the appropriate university choices.


4.    Examination


  • Work with Testing Coordinator to ensure that students participate in key university tests during the university application process.
  • Report regularly about the updated record of PSAT, SAT and AP examinations, students’ acceptance and attending colleges, and progress of each student through high school diploma plan. 
  • Assist with proctoring students taking required university examinations.


5.    Documentary review


  • Prepare information to be used in the school profile, complete school supporting documents as needed for university applications.  Prepare the application packets to be sent to universities. Help proofread applications forms and references/recommendations.

Qualification & Experience

  • Bachelor degree holder from an accredited university.  Certified teacher is preferred but not essential.
  • School working experience, ideally with university guidance or in a counselling role is highly preferable.
  • Solid knowledge of university placement requirements in the US, Canada, UK and Hong Kong.
  • Familiarity with PSAT, SAT, SAT subject tests, AP, IGCSE, IBDP and local public examinations that may impact university admissions.
  • Experience in sharing with a large group of students, parents and professionals is essential.
  • Familiarity with university scholarship processes (preferably).


Skill & Personality

  • Written and spoken English at native level, spoken Cantonese or Mandarin is highly preferable.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to build a trust relationship with students and parents.
  • Maintain good personal network with local and overseas popular universities.
  • High level of literacy and accuracy particularly in handling transcripts, testimonials, recommendations, essays and personal statements.
  • Sensitive to highly confidential matters.
  • Passionate in nurturing young adults with patience care, identify their academic strengths, maturity, needs and career aspiration.
  • Be fully cognizant of the need to work outside normal school hours (after-school and weekends) as required.
