Science & Mathematics Coordinator (Elementary School)

Job Description

The job holder will provide curricular and instructional support and coaching to elementary teachers as they work to implement the ICS Curriculum in the areas of Science and Mathematics using the Next Generation Science Standards, and the Common Core State Standards Mathematics.  They will work with teachers and administrators to support best instructional practices using data, analyze trends in instruction and make recommendations about potential next steps to address areas of need.  The job holder will also provide instructional support and coaching for quality teaching and learning including technology integration as it relates to Science and Mathematics. 

Key Responsibilities

1.    Teaching and Learning responsibilities

  • Plan, co-teach, and coach elementary faculty in Science and Mathematics drawing on Next Generation Science Standards, and the Common Core State Standards Mathematics.  
  • Support Science and Mathematics curriculum alignment.
  • Integrate inquiry-based learning through Science and Mathematics curriculum.
  • Promote and integrate technology to enhance learning in Science and Mathematics curriculum.

2.    Professional Learning responsibilities:

  • In collaboration with administrators, curriculum & instruction faculty, and teachers plan and provide professional learning opportunities in the area of Science and Mathematics.
  • Provide training for individuals, and small groups in Science and Mathematics, and subject-specific technologies.
  • Provide parent and stakeholder education related to Science and Mathematics learning.

3.    Curriculum and Instruction responsibilities:

  • Develop an understanding of the ICS learning systems and frameworks, integrating them into teaching, learning, and curriculum work.
  • Provide leadership and support teachers to align and integrate the Next Generation Science Standards, the Common Core State Standards Mathematics, and the Standards for Mathematical Practice.
  • Identify appropriate research-based instructional strategies and interventions to improve Science and Mathematics achievement in students.
  • Use data to inform process and adjustments in instructional strategies and interventions.
  • Promote a growing culture and practice related to 21 century learning and digital citizenship.

4.    Research and Learning responsibilities:

  • Keep up-to-date with the latest research in Science and Mathematics, and subject-specific technology to support quality teaching and learning, and make recommendations about potential next steps to address areas of need to administrators.
  • Maintain a learning mindset, collaborating with personal within and external to the school community in the areas of Science and Mathematics.

Qualification & Experience

  • Master Degree in Education, Science or Mathematics preferable.
  • Records of engagement with peers such as through conference presentations, professional writing and personal learning networks and communities of practice.
  • Evidence of continued relevant professional learning.
  • At least 5 years of classroom teaching experience.
  • Science and Mathematics coaching experience will be an advantage.
  • Experience in standards-based curriculum, assessment, and instruction.
  • An understanding of key learning theories and methods of instruction, and their relation to Science and Mathematics teaching.
  • Understanding of elementary learner developmental needs.
  • Understanding of adult learners and experience in facilitating adult learning.
  • Experience teaching using an integrated inquiry learning approach.
  • Experience in implementing innovative teaching and learning practices such as learning networks, flipped classroom, authentic assessment, project-based learning, game-based learning, etc.
  • Experience working in a 1:1 classrooms and handheld learning environments.

Skill & Personality

  • Proven ability to work collaboratively, positively, and effectively with colleagues, particularly within a change process, including the ability to create and nurture a professional community of adult learners.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to build a trust relationship with teachers and students, including giving and receiving constructive feedback.
  • Outstanding presentation and facilitation skills.  
  • Proven ability to manage a complex workload, prioritize tasks, and use appropriate judgement in providing services based on goals.
  • Courage, initiative, and willingness to experiment with new strategies.
  • Commitment to continuous professional learning including a commitment to deep reflection and growth, and willingness to undertake training where necessary.
  • Ability to manage students effectively.  Able to stay calm in difficult situations.
  • Ability to maintain flexibility and a growth mindset in challenging and demanding situations.
  • An attitude of open-mindedness, integrity, professional behavior, and a high level of personal accountability.
