Part-time Sport Coaches (Football | Basketball | Badminton) (Several Positions)

Job Description

The job holder will be responsible for coaching, character development and providing direction to student athletes so that they might achieve athletic excellence as well as an appreciation for discipline, sportsmanship and teamwork.

Key Responsibilities

1. Coaching and Supervision

  • Create a safe environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social and emotional development of students.
  • Coach student athletes in game strategies, techniques and tactics; focus on skill development, safety, fair play, team unity, sportsmanship and fun.
  • Establish and maintain standard of student athletes’ behavior and provide proper supervision at all times. Assess student athletes’ skills and assign team positions. Monitor physical condition and mental attitude of the student athletes.
  • After checking with the Athletics Director, provide rules interpretations to student athletes for the purpose of ensuring compliance with ISSFHK and ACSC rules and requirements.
  • Interact thoughtfully and courteously with students, faculty, staff, parents, and officials and resolve conflict in a professional manner.
  • Motivate student athletes to develop an appreciation of the sports.
  • Model good sportsmanship behavior and maintain appropriate conduct towards opposing team, fans, parents, spectators and community.
  • Be on time, and supervise all the scheduled practices and games.
  • Ensure the safeguarding and well-being of students and vulnerable adults at the school and ensure that the School meets legal and best practice health and safety obligations.
  • Follow school protocols for handling student injuries, including communication with parents and Athletics Director.
2. Planning

  • Prepare and implement well-structured and progressive practice sessions ensuring high quality and an enjoyable learning experience.
  • Communicate with the Athletics Director to become familiar with the school’s practice and games schedule.
  • Follow school procedures to book buses as needed.
3. Administration

  • Ensure all athletic equipment associated with the coaching programs are correctly set up, maintained, stored and returned.
  • Report accidents and incidents to the Athletics Director and the Dean of Co-Curricular Education & Pastoral Care.
  • Communicate with the Athletics Director as needed to ensure that the team is properly compliant with ISSFHK requirements (e.g. registration, photo ID’s, team lists, etc), and to update the Athletics Director with any ISSFHK disputes, changes.
4. Public Relations

  • Develop the values of enthusiastic spirit, teamwork, trust, acknowledgement, recognition and empowerment.
  • Foster and maintain positive relationships with students, faculty, staff, alumni, community members and organizations.
  • Develop and promote programs aimed at encouraging a lifelong commitment to health and wellness, and enable a culture of healthy bodies, healthy minds, and healthy campus.
  • Demonstrate a welcoming attitude to visiting teams and assist them (or direct them to assistance) as needed.
  • Cooperate with the Athletics Director to promote and develop community interest in and support for the School’s sports activities.

Qualification & Experience

  • Holder of recognized certified coaching qualification.
  • Possess a valid first aid and CPR certificate.
  • Bachelor degree in Physical Education/Sports Science/Kinesiology or equivalent is preferred.
  • At least 2 years of coaching experience in a secondary school setting is preferred.
  • At least 5 years of experience in coaching competitive teams is preferred.
  • A proven track record with age appropriate skill and program development is preferred.
  • Experience in interpreting, comprehending, and applying sports league rules and requirements.
  • Previous experience in an international school is preferred.
  • Good understanding of child protection/child development including safeguarding and best practice in sport and education.
  • Knowledge of basic physiology would be an advantage.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills to build a trust relationship and connect with students and parents in a friendly and authoritative manner.
  • Able to manage confrontation and challenging behavior. Able to stay calm in difficult situations.

Work Arrangement

  • Work Period:
    • U14 Boys Football: Season 1 – from August 2018 to November 2018
    • U14 Boys Basketball: Season 2 – from November 2018 to February 2019
    • U16 Boys Basketball: Season 2 – from November 2018 to February 2019
    • Badminton: Season 3 – from February 2019 to April 2019
    • U12 Boys Football: Season 4 – from April 2019 to June 2019

  • Work Hours: 3-4 sessions per week. Practices 3:30pm to 5:00pm, games will usually go later depending on schedule and location.
