Letter for Applicants

Overview

International Christian School is committed to providing quality instruction for all students, including students with special diverse learning needs.  The Bridges Program started in August 2010 with an elementary class serving the needs of students between the ages of 6-10 who have cognitive and adaptive behavioral delays.  A secondary level classroom started in August of 2011 to serve the educational needs of children ages 10-18.

Students admitted to Bridges will have a diagnosed cognitive and adaptive behavioral developmental disability that adversely affects their learning and educational performance to such a degree that they cannot receive a standard course of study.  The Bridges curriculum is a tier-3 alternative program with seven components:  (1) Functional academics involving reading, writing, and math; (2) Communication; (3) Social skills development; (4) Pre-vocational training; (5) Life skills; (6) Christian character development; and (7) Integration into non-content school activities.  Students enrolled in Bridges may complete the program leading to a certificate of completion rather than a standard High School diploma.

Program

Students will receive individual and small group instruction involving the seven components listed above.  Each component will involve standards that may be individualized for each student’s instructional need and identified on an ICS Bridges Learning Plan.   Students enrolled in this program will have cognitive and adaptive behavioral delays that fall within the standard score or IQ range of 55-75; placing them below the 5th percentile.

Bridges may enroll students between the ages of 6-16.  Students must be 6 years of age by September 1st and cannot be older than 16 by September 1st for consideration.  For the purposes of future program graduation and integration activities, each student will be aligned with their same aged peers.

Both the elementary and secondary Bridges classrooms are staffed with three educators:  One teacher specialist, one educational assistant, and one teacher assistant.  The staffing ratio of adult to student shall not exceed more than 4:1.  Current ratios are lower with a 2:1 ratio in both classes.

Ministry

The International Christian School is pleased to offer the Bridges Program as an outreach ministry to families with students needing an alternative education.  We genuinely strive to present the love of God through our service.

“How precious is your steadfast love, oh God!  Your children take refuge in the shadow of your wings.”   Psalms 36:7
